Feel Better. Move Better. Live Better.

Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy
You are here:

Pelvic floor dysfunction is very common in the general population but most people are too shy to talk about it. Pelvic floor muscles support your bowel, bladder, sexual function, and even contribute to your core strength. Pelvic Floor Dysfunction can be the cause of painful intercourse, chronic lower back pain, and bladder leakage. Since this topic isn’t openly discussed it can lead to feelings of embarrassment and uneasiness.

Pelvic Dysfunction Relief

Pelvic dysfunction is common in both men & women. You can develop a weak pelvic floor from pregnancy (diastasis recti) and childbirth, surgery (hysterectomy), heavy lifting, obesity, chronic constipation, and more. Symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction include:

  • Incontinence
  • Painful sex
  • Sense of urgency & frequent urination
  • Muscle tightness
  • Chronic pelvic pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Chronic low back pain
  • Pelvic muscle spasms
  • Constipation or bowel strain
  • Pain in the rectum

Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy

At Denise Semple & Associates we offer two types of extremely effective treatment options under the umbrella of Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy to improve patient outcome. Each therapy has its advantage and should be equally considered for rehabilitation.

External Pelvic Health Physiotherapy

Our physiotherapists have extensive education and training in pelvic floor disorders. In this type of treatment we work externally to help you see results. Treatments will include but are not limited to:

  • Bowel & bladder education
  • Gentle external manual therapy
  • Soft tissue release
  • Pelvic girdle exercises
  • Core muscle control & strengthening
  • Pelvic girdle floor muscle re-education

Internal Pelvic Health Physiotherapy

You may have heard of “Kegel Exercises” but this goes beyond the basics, some think of it as “internal pilates.” Internal Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy is considered the gold standard because we are able to locate and assess the muscles inside the pelvis that need to be rehabilitated. Feeling the muscles internally allows us to better diagnose the situation, educate you on muscle contraction, and in some cases ensure a more successful outcome.

Rest assured that our therapists are not only registered with the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario but they are also rostered to conduct internal palpitation and examination. This means they have completed additional education and training to safely conduct this exam. Your physiotherapist can discuss this treatment option with you when you are comfortable and ready to start.
