Physiotherapists are regulated healthcare professionals uniquely trained in the field of movement therapy. Through the use of manual as well as other modalities, Physiotherapists examine their patients to discover effective, efficient and minimally invasive treatments that aim to aid their clients reach their optimal level of activity throughout their lives.
Decreasing the pain experienced by their clients is one way that Physiotherapists help their patients live well.
When someone is facing the need for hip replacement surgery, whether partial or complete, seeking the aid of a Physiotherapist would;
- Improve their strength and flexibility in the muscles around the hip joint, which can help with pain management and mobility while they wait for surgery.
- Teach people about movements and activities to avoid, such as crossing their legs, bending the hip more than 90 degrees, or twisting the hip.
According to the Ontario government website, the wait times for hip replacement surgery in Southern Ontario vary depending on the priority level of the patient’s condition, the hospital where the surgery is performed, and the availability of surgeons and resources. Here in Burlington, Ontario, a
- Priority 4 patient should be seen within 182 days
- Priority 3 patient should be seen within 90 days
- Priority 2 patient should be seen within 30 days
(Priority 1 patients are in emergency situations and therefore not included in this listing)
As many people have heard and experienced, the wait times listed above may have been extended based on the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused delays and cancellations of elective surgeries across Canada. A report by the Canadian Institute for Health Information found that only half of Canadian patients received their hip replacement surgery within the recommended time frame between April and September 2022.
These inadvertent delays have caused many patients to experience;
- Increased pain, suffering, and mental anguish
- Worsening condition of the joint that may make the surgery more complex
- Joint deformity, stiffness, and muscle weakness that may affect a patient’s mobility and rehabilitation
- Compensatory problems in other parts of their body due to altered gait and/or posture
Each of these concerns can be addressed by booking pre surgery Physiotherapy appointments with Monil Suni PT through Denise Semple and Associates Healthcare Clinic.
