Metabolic Syndrome
You are here:

Metabolic Syndrome is a cluster of metabolic disorders that can increase your risk of disease including heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes.

Metabolic Syndrome Facts

Most people don’t fret about their health, but as we age it is easy for conditions to sneak up that put you at risk for long-term disease or illness. Conditions like increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess abdominal weight, and abnormal cholesterol can all add up resulting in Metabolic Syndrome.

  • Metabolic Syndrome significantly increases your chance of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes.
  • Metabolic Syndrome is closely linked to a sedentary lifestyle (inactivity) and unhealthy eating habits that lead to excess weight and obesity.
  • Age, ethnicity, weight, diabetes, and comorbidity are all factors that contribute to your risk of developing Metabolic Syndrome.
  • According to the American Heart Association, Metabolic Syndrome affects 23% of adults and more than 40% of seniors are affected.

Symptoms of Metabolic Syndrome

You may not show obvious symptoms of Metabolic Syndrome. Visibly large waist circumference and high blood sugar may be your only indicators. If you suspect you might be at risk of Metabolic Syndrome you should consult your medical doctor for further testing. Factors that put you more at risk of this disease include:

  • A waist circumference of more than 40” in men and 35” in women
  • High fasting blood glucose levels (100mg/dl or greater)
  • Hypertension or blood pressure of 130/85 mm/HG or higher
  • High-density lipoprotein (HLD) cholesterol levels that are high
  • High blood triglyceride levels
