The term headache is a broad term that describes pain in any region of the head. There are over ten types of headaches with one of the most well known being migraines. If you suffer from headaches then your lifestyle, genetics, or environmental factors may be at play.

  • There are over ten types of common headaches including migraines, tension headaches, cluster headaches, sinus headaches (caused by allergies or infection), caffeine headaches, hypertension headaches, post-trauma headaches (concussion), or exertion headaches.
  • Headaches can occur suddenly or be the result of stain or intense exercise and can be acute or chronic and ongoing.
  • Hormone changes from pregnancy or menopause can cause headaches in women.
  • The way you sit (poor posture) and sleep (poor neck support and tension) can cause headaches.
  • Diet and lifestyle are also a large contributing factor to headaches.

Headache Types & Symptoms

According to the Headache Society, nearly half of all adult Canadians experience headaches with migraines being the most prevalent type. Headaches can be classified into two main types with different symptoms accompanying each type. Types of headaches include:

  1.  Primary Headaches (the headache is the primary issue)
  2. Secondary Headaches (a headache as a result of another underlying issue or trauma)

Headache symptoms and locations vary depending on the root cause. In general, symptoms can include:

  • Pain in your head and/or neck
  • Pain that is dull, sharp, throbbing, mild, or intense.
  • A feeling of nausea or vomiting that accompanies head pain
  • Vision problems as a result of a migraine
  • A vice or tension like feeling around your head
  • Cause, duration, and intensity can vary depending on the type of headache you are experiencing.
