Arthritis Facts

Arthritis is a painful condition that can affect your daily movements and functioning by causing swelling and tenderness in the joints of your body. Pushing a grandchild on a swing, baking, grip strength, sports, and a healthy active lifestyle can all be affected by arthritis. With age, pain and stiffness associated with arthritis get worse. Arthritis can be caused by different root health issues which means treatment for this condition should be tailored to your specific type of arthritis.

  • The two most common types of arthritis are Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis which have different root causes.
  • According to the Arthritis Foundation, people of all ages, sexes, and races have arthritis and it is one of the leading causes of disability. Although women and seniors seem to be more susceptible to arthritis.
  • Arthritis can cause permanent joint changes that can be visible to the naked eye.
  • Risk factors that contribute to arthritis include genetics, age, sex, obesity, and previous traumatic injuries.

Arthritis Symptoms

Even though the cause of arthritis may vary, developing a treatment plan specific to you is important in the management of symptoms.

Osteoarthritis: Wear and tear that has caused damage to the joint cartilage deteriorating the connective tissues that attach muscle to bone. This causes damage to the bone and inflammation of the tissue lining.

Rheumatoid Arthritis: Is an immune system disease that attacks the lining and membrane of the joint. This causes inflammation and swelling.

Psoriatic Arthritis: Psoriatic arthritis affects the skin and joints.

Symptoms of arthritis revolve around joints with the most commonly affected areas being knees, hips, hands, and spine. Signs that you may have arthritis include:

  • Joint pain
  • Swelling
  • Stiffness (reduced range of motion)
  • Warmth at the joint
