Hip Pain
You are here:

Hip pain affects almost 30,000 Canadians yearly and costs around $650 million in pain intervention and care.

Hip Pain Facts

Hip pain is uncomfortable, it affects your mobility, your ability to stand for prolonged periods, and can also affect your sleep. Hip pain is a general term to describe pain in and around your hip joint. Age, excess weight, sports injuries, disease, and trauma are all contributing factors to hip pain.

  • According to Bone & Joint Canada, almost 30,000 people across Canada experience a hip fracture each year. This is particularly relevant in the senior population.
  • Problems with your true hip joint can result in pain on the inside of your hip and groin. Pain on your upper thigh and outer buttocks is usually the result of problems with the surrounding muscles and ligaments.
  • Inflamed tendons, osteoarthritis, trochanteric bursitis, hip fractures (from falling), and pinched nerves are all contributing causes of hip pain. You can also have referral pain caused by disease or dysfunction in other areas of your body such as your lower back.
  • Depending on the cause of hip pain you may require surgical intervention and physical rehabilitation for recovery.

Hip Pain Symptoms

The symptoms of your hip pain depend largely on the underlying cause of the pain. Here are some common causes of hip pain:

  • Osteoarthritis: Considered a “wear and tear” arthritis and can occur in both hips. Sometimes this requires hip surrey or replacement and rehabilitation.
  • Sprains & Strains: Usually involving a torn ligament that connects two bones at the hips. Symptoms include soreness, bruising, aching, burning, throbbing, stiffness.
  • Dislocated Hip: Also known as hip subluxation is a joint injury where the “ball” is forced out of the “socket.” This can occur during extreme activities or high impact sports. Symptoms include sudden extreme pain, inability to move or walk on the hip, numbness, weakness, swelling, redness.
  • Fractures: Are common in the senior population and generally the result of a fall or low bone density due to osteoporosis. Symptoms include hip pain, bruising, swelling, redness.
  • Snapping Hip: A feeling or popping sound from your hip when you walk, stand up from sitting position or swing your leg around. This is usually harmless and has no real symptoms.
  • Trochanteric Bursitis: Inflammation of the small fluid-filled sacs around the hip joint usually caused by repetitive strain injuries. Symptoms include pain on the hip or thigh and buttocks, pain when lying down, increased pain when sitting or driving.
