Lower Back Pain Facts

Your lumbar spine or lower back provides strength, flexibility, mobility, and support to your body. Lower back pain is so common that even children can experience it. Pain in this region of your lumbar can be dull and achy, sharp, movement restricting, or in some cases radiating pain and/or numbness down the legs. Lower back pain can be associated with heaving lifting or new activities but in some cases, the pain and dysfunction slowly build over time.

  • The lower back refers to the lumbar region including vertebrae L1 to L5. You can experience lower back pain that is mechanical from the muscles, ligaments, and joints or radicular which is inflammation of the spinal nerve root.
  • Lower back pain can be acute (sudden onset followed by short term pain that resolves usually within a few weeks) or chronic (pain that continues for two months or longer after the initial injury requiring treatment or intervention).
  • The cause of lower back pain can range from injury, sprains, disc degeneration, osteoporosis, fibromyalgia, and more.
  • Age, weight gain, pregnancy, fitness level, job-related factors, genetics, and proper posture all contribute to lower back pain and discomfort.

Symptoms of Lower Back Pain

  • Dull aching pain that is only in your lumbar region

  • Difficulty with mobility like getting up from sitting to standing, standing up straight, and walking
  • Pain that increases after sitting or standing for a long period of time
