Pilates is a physical fitness system invented by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th Century during World War II to aid the recovery of injured soldiers. There was no money for elaborate equipment so he made use of bed springs as resistance to rehabilitate the soldiers. The spring system is still used today in the Pilates machines the “reformer” the ‘Wunda Chair’ and the ‘Cadellac’.

Pilates is a series of controlled movements, and if practiced with consistency and precision will strengthen ones ‘Core’ (the core is made up of muscles of the abdomen, the low back and hips). It will also help improve flexibility, strength, develop muscular control and endurance.

There is a strong emphasis on:

  • Correct breathing
  • Alignment
  • Precision of movement
  • Balance
  • Coordination

Pilates is a diverse and adaptable form of exercise for all levels of strength and fitness. So, whether you are a seasoned athlete or a beginner, someone who has chronic pain or injuries, Pilates can be adapted to suit your needs.

Pilates can be performed using a machine called a Reformer, or on a mat on the floor.
